• What is DocJet 1.0.2?
DocJet 1.0.2 is a wonderful utility for opening any file type by means of an alternative application.
With DocJet 1.0.2 you can also link any given application to a key (and you choose the key...): when you drag a file while
holding down that key, your file is opened by the linked application. Last but not least, DocJet 1.0.2 can directly open any file, including cdevs, desk accessories, disks, folders, simply by typing a key. At last, you can remove any alias from your desktop and leave there DocJet 1.0.2 only...
• How to use DocJet 1.0.2?
This way:
1-Drop Application.
When you drag a file on its icon, DocJet 1.0.2 looks in a database for an appropriate record: if a record exists for that file type DocJet 1.0.2 will open it with the application stored in the record. Otherwise it asks you for a new record...
To remove a record, simply drag the document of the type you want to delete while holding down the option key.
No dialogs, all is simple and fast…
2-Master Applications.
DocJet 1.0.2 allows you to have many master applications to open any file type. To set these applications simply drag whatever file on the DocJet 1.0.2 icon while holding down a key. DocJet 1.0.2 looks in its database for an appropriate record: if a record exists for that key DocJet 1.0.2 will attempt to open your files with the master application stored in the record. Otherwise it asks you for a new record...
You can assign a master application to any key of your keyboard except the modifier keys (why?) ;-)
To remove a master application simply open DocJet 1.0.2 by a double click on its icon while holding down the key associated to that master application. (if you don't want to double-click on DocJet 1.0.2 icon, you can select its icon, type command-O, then take quickly your finger away from "O" and command keys and hold down the master application key…)
Once more no dialogs, all is simple and fast again…
3-Opener.
DocJet 1.0.2 allows you to open directly applications, documents, disks, folders, controls, desk accessories, doors (ooops...), just the same way you double-click on their icons... Simply double-click on DocJet 1.0.2 icon while holding down the command key: a little window will ask you to type a key, then, if an appropriate record exists for that key DocJet 1.0.2 will open the "item" stored in the record. Otherwise it asks you for a new record...(if you don't want to double-click on DocJet 1.0.2 icon, you can even select its icon, type command-O then take quickly your finger away from the "O" key…)
You can assign a file to any key of your keyboard except the modifier keys (again: why?) ;-)
To remove a record: double-click on DocJet 1.0.2 icon while holding down the option key; another little window will ask you to type the key relative to the record to be deleted: press that key and the record will be removed... (again: if you don't want to double-click on DocJet 1.0.2 icon, you can even select its icon, type command-O, then take quickly your finger away from "O" and command keys and hold down the option key…)
Only a little dialog, now, but all is more simple and fast…
• When you open normally DocJet 1.0.2.
A window, with this read me and various buttons will show. Pressing the button "Show records" you will get a list of the filed records (and pressing the button "Register DocJet" you will register DocJet 1.0.2 ;-) ).
• Please, read these notes.
1: DocJet 1.0.2, in Drag&Drop mode, works with folder & disk, but make not a distinction between folder & disk, it considers both as directories. Don't worry: your target application should be able to understand the difference...
2: If DocJet 1.0.2 does not work in Opener mode, try to install, in your System folder, the 'Finder Scripting Extension' by Apple Computer, Inc. (this extension takes only about 130 bytes of memory...), and the Opener mode will work!
3: If an application uses DropKeys, is DocJet 1.0.2 able to work with it? Yes, you only should find the right times…
4: You can assign the same key to a master application and to a file to be opened with the opener: don't worry, DocJet 1.0.2 saves in a different database for each mode.
5: Remember: if you open an application while holding down the option key, the folder containing the application will be closed... If you don't want to close that folder you should double click on the application icon, then hold down the option key...but in this case you should put DocJet 1.0.2 on the desktop.
6: To avoid problems with macro editors like KeyQuencer, DocJet 1.0.2 does not recognize more than one key at the time: if you do it anyway, the result will be impredictable :-(
7: When you assign a key, DocJet 1.0.2 does not recognize the character associated to that key but just the key! Therefore, in the list of records, the indication of characters assumes the use of an American Standard Keyboard (QWERTY). People from other countries may have some differences between the key assigned and the character shown in the list (i.e.: an Italian user will see "W" instead "Z", "/" instead "ò", "\" for "§", etc.). If a lot of shareware fees will arrive from countries different from U.S.A., I will release a version for those countries :-)
8: While DocJet 1.0.2 is opened you can use all its Drag&Drop features but not those who imply a double-click on its icon... You can also use all the Drag&Drop features while the "List record" window is opened, but the list will not be updated until the window will be opened again.
9: DocJet 1.0.2 supports the dragging of many items. If you like to increase its capacity, you need only to increase the memory allocated to DocJet 1.0.2.
10: DocJet 1.0.2 requires at least System 7 to run.
